Abstract

Systematic fields are rarely analyzed in comparative studies of football commentaries in Egyptian Arabic and British English. The current research reveals accumulative levels of interpretation between English and Arabic football commentaries according to lexical, syntactical, and pragmatic features sequentially. Deep analysis of pragmatic features and their contextual interrelation with other aspects is a defining attribute of the current work. The use of illocutionary speech act models is more strongly supported by Arabic samples. Arabic commentary is more interesting and pleasant, capturing the audience's attention. Comparatively speaking, the majority of English samples state the locutionary act force. English commentary, however, tends to favour the reporting approach over the interactive situation.
